Esportsgallery.com
sells lithographs, serigraphs, giclees, artists'
proofs,
and originals. Here is a quick guide to help distinguish
each type of piece:
Originals
Originals are just that: the original! Whichever medium an artist
chooses
to use with an original, one-of-a-kind painting or sketch.
Artist Proof's (AP)
An artist proof (AP) is physically the same thing as a signed and
numbered
print. The artist and publisher inspect for quality control and
approval.
Why is an Artist Proof worth more? For the simple fact that the
edition is
much smaller than the signed and numbered one. Supply and demand
dictates a tighter market for artist proofs. A serigraph is a fine
art print.
Also known as a silk-screen or screenprint. "Seri" from the Latin
means
silk, and "graph" means to draw or write. Each color (from one to
hundreds)
is added to the paper or canvas individually as it is pressed through
silk
stencils (or a man-made simulation) with a squeegee. Serigraphs
are usually
identified by the expanses of flat or evenly graded color. The color
is a
uniform layer of pigment coating the paper or canvas. This is a
painstaking
process and usually results in small editions. A single print may
take as many
as 25 days to complete. Many experts feel this method holds true
to the
original. This, coupled with the fact that this process takes so
much longer,
usually means these prints retail at a higher value than a lithograph.
Giclee
The term "giclée" (pronounced zhee-clay) from its French origin,
means
"to spray". This high-end reproduction process was initially developed
and
made popular for the reproduction of photography. Special "ink sets"
comprise
the colors that are digitally sprayed through tiny jets onto the
paper or canvas,
which is wrapped on a drum. The advantages of this process are its
accuracy
unnoticeable time. Giclees offer unparalleled quality, longevity
and the
desirability of printing-on-demand. Whether producing an original,
enhancing
an image or reproducing original art, the Giclée process will render
an image
of exceptional clarity. Giclée prints will exceed your greatest
expectations.
Lithograph
In the lithograph process
a photograph is taken of an original painting.
Then it is reproduced with an
offset lithographprinting press.
These quality presses can get very close to the original colors in a painting.
At Esportsgallery.com we only sell limited edition lithographs.
